Announcing Your Engagement
It is customary in many parts of the country to
publish an engagement announcement in the local paper. Every paper is
somewhat different on its submission policies, so you should first contact the
newspaper's lifestyle or society editor to predetermine the guidelines to follow.
The announcement can be made by your parents, you and your fiancι' and/or by
the groom's family (especially if they live out of the city or state and would
love to have it published in their hometown paper. Engagement
announcements are published as far in advance as a year before the wedding, and
in today's society with couples planning further in advance, it is not uncommon
to see an announcement even longer than a year before their special day.
When submitting your engagement announcement be sure
that it is typed out (to avoid possible handwriting confusion). Avoid all
possibilities of having your submission published incorrectly.
Your announcement
should include:
-
The full names of
the bride and groom to be.
-
The names of each set of parents.
-
The city and state in which the wedding will be held (especially if it is
to take place in a different location from which the announcement is being
published).
-
The date of your special day (some couples that haven't pinpointed an
exact date just include the year they plan to marry).
-
You may also include information about your education, careers, or special
achievements you are proud of.
-
Many papers also allow you to include a photo if you choose (today more
photos are submitted of couples than the traditional picture of only the
bride-to-be). Please check with the person in charge of announcement
submissions, keeping in mind that many photos are seldom returned. (This
meaning .... don't submit the only copy of your favorite picture together!)
